Visit to Pertapis Children’s Home

Doing community service is an act of kindness, more so that we being Scouts should cultivate this spirit of community building. This time, we decided to pay a visit to Pertapis Children’s Home located in Yio Chu Kang and engage the children there.
Pertapis Children’s Home houses around fifty – hundred Malay boys and girls ranging from 6 – 16 years. Most of them come from underprivileged backgrounds and are in the home not of their own choices. For those of us who are privileged to come from good homes, and often take alot of basic things for granted, ie. aircon, fast food and branded stuff, do remember that there are people who are less fortunate than you before you think of complaining about not having all these conveniences and wants!
This community service was a joint activity between Unity Scouts & Guides. Upon reaching the Home, we started off with ice-breaking games. The weather was scorching hot at this time. After ice-breakers, outdoor cooking commenced. During this time, small groupds were deployed to run various errands around the home, ie. watering the plants, sorting out of clothing, cleaning etc. To most of us, BBQ is something that we do often, but to the children, they were pretty happy to cook! Food was abundant, thanks to the contribution from all. We also engaged the children in games, namely soccer and captain’s ball. Games was the common language in allowing both groups of people to come and have fun together, even for a short period of time. I think everyone enjoyed themselves during this time.
Time flew past pretty quickly and we departed from the Home around 1pm. Despite the short time there, I think the time spent is fruitful. We will definately try to make this a more frequent affair and hope that the little we can do will spread good cheer to the children there.
